2.Project Description/Background

 Ministry of Mines and Petroleum is an enabler of the sector’s development and steward of all mineral and hydrocarbon resources through the implementation of international best practice, policies, regulations and procedures to encourage environmentally and socially acceptable private investment.
It is the responsibility of the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum to ensure progress in research, exploration, development, and exploitation of both minerals and hydrocarbons. The Ministry of Mines and Petroleum approach is to create the highest level of ministerial competence, promote clear and transparent investment opportunities through modern laws, regulation and policies; and develop a progressive and inviting fiscal regime.

The MoMP is now seeking well-qualified individual for the position of Geological Advisor (International) to assist Afghansitan Geological Survey General Directorate achieve its goals.

3.Assignment Objective

The Geological Advisor provides direction and advice to the Directorate General, Field Teams, impacting the strategic development and exploration concepts within the MoMP. Although the primary role is geological the position is viewed as a company-wide resource providing technical expertise and influence at many levels. This position reports to Directorate General Afghanistan Geological Survey (AGS). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

4.Scope of Work

Below is the outline of activities to be undertaken by the Geological Advisor.

  • Integrate geological, petrographical, petrophysical and geophysical data to develop and evaluate exploration plays or to efficiently develop a producing asset.
  • Collect and analyze geological, resource and production data to aid in deposit description and development.
  • Work closely with a multi-discipline team, including geophysicists, petrophysicists, drilling, completion, production and field engineers and landmen to achieve directed corporate objectives.
  • Develop and guide prospects through to well proposals and drilling plans, operational drilling of wells, post-well evaluation, early appraisal planning, and reintegration of results into play analysis and revised prospect inventory.
  • Provides direct, complete and actionable development feedback to geoscience teams.
  • Plans and supports the development of knowledge, skills and abilities needed to fulfill current and future functional needs.
  • Advise geoscience teams on value adding potential projects, workflows and techniques.

5.Expected Outputs and Deliverables

The main key deliverable of the assignment is:

  1. A standard geological report format prepared for AGS, which is used internationally. Considering business and scientific dimensions of the field work output.
  2. A general outline/ format for AGS maps.
  3. A comprehensive systematic mapping plan developed, for 1: 250,000 1: 100,000 scale.
  4. Based on most recent field works conducted, the 1: 500,000 geological map of Afghanistan is upgraded and verified.

6. Length & Location of Assignment

  The Consultant will be expected to work closely with formally designated MoMP in Kabul, Afghanistan. The duration of the contract will be 12/months with a potential of extension.

7.Minimum Qualifications


Masters of Science in Geology required, PhD preferred



  • A Minimum of 10 Years of direct Geological mapping, exploration, production and operations experience required.
  • Must be able to utilize geological thinking creatively, drawing on a broad spectrum of regional knowledge and experience and geological, petrographical, petrophysical and geophysical principles to make quality decisions.
  • Must be able to lead projects from conception to drilling.
  • In-depth knowledge of drilling operations, from development of exploration concepts to asset management.
  • Extensive experience in multiple basins with drilling, completions and production operations.
  • Experience and expertise in unconventional deposits, basic seismic, gravity and magnetic interpretation, petrophysical analysis and working with complex structural and stratigraphic plays.
  • Interpersonal skills to participate in dynamic team projects within an integrated team environment.
  • Deals comfortably with uncertainty and can deal constructively with issues that arise.
  • Proven ability to effectively develop people at all levels and foster a team environment.


  • Strong analytical skills and report writing skills
  • Understanding and knowledge of Geology.
  • Ability to work under pressure, effectively coordinate research with the team and meet tight deadlines without compromising quality of work.
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of standard PC software packages (MS. Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.) is essential.

8.Conflict of Interest

 The Consultant is required to disclose on any potential, actual, or perceived conflicts of interest arising out of other assignments or a conflicting involvement in other assignments.


The Geological Advisor agrees to keep confidential all information that it receives, directly or indirectly, from the Afghan Government, its agencies or ministries, or any other source, as well as all reports, briefs and opinions prepared by the Consultant, or by third parties, on the basis of such information (collectively, the Material). The Advisor will use the Material exclusively for the purpose of preparing deliverables relevant to this assignment as requested by the Government of Afghanistan and/or the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum. The confidentiality obligations will not apply to information in the public domain
